Malaysia's Westports throughput up 17pc in first half

Westports Malaysia in Port Klang increased its throughput by 17 per cent during the first half of 2008, after handling 2.45 million TEU, up from 2.08 TEU million for the same period last year.

This puts the port on track to achieving its target of 5 million TEU in 2008.

It gives Westports a market share of 62 per cent in Port Klang. Additionally, Westports' throughput for the month of June reached its highest to-date with a volume of 435,000 TEU, it said in a company statement.

Ruben Emir Gnanalingam, CEO of Westports Malaysia, said: "The strong growth by our lines was fuelled by new services which links the East to Europe, Middle East, the Indian Sub-continent as well as Intra-Asia trade.

"Notably, two of our lines, namely Yang Ming and TS Line posted a 300 per cent growth while other lines chartered double digit growth for local volume," he said.

On the port expansion, Mr Ruben pointed out that Westports has completed a 300-metre wharf, with another 300 metres scheduled for completion by September this year, bringing its total berth length to 3,200 metres.

"Additionally, we are also taking delivery of three super postpanamax quay cranes this month and another three in September," added Mr Ruben.
